god
Apollo
also: Πάων, Paon, Paean, the Far-darter
God of music, prophecy, and the bow. In fr. 44 the men of Troy hail him as Paon — the healer-name shouted in the paean — far-shooter and master of the lyre, the right god for a wedding made of song.
Reading notes
- Fragments of Book Two §44 Paon
Apollo under his healer-name, the one shouted in the paean; 'far-shooter' and 'master of the lyre' are his epic epithets. A city singing to the god of song closes a poem that is itself the song.
