Prince of Troy, its great defender in the Iliad. In fr. 44 he is not yet Homer's doomed champion but a bridegroom, bringing Andromache home over the salt sea to a city in festival.

Troy's defender, here at the one moment epic never shows him: his own wedding. Every hearer carried the Iliad's ending into the song — the joy is built over its own ruin, unmentioned and everywhere.
